Carers from a Midlands-based care service are celebrating after scooping an award for their work with those with learning disabilities across the region, two years in a row.
Supporting You in the Midlands (SYI Midlands), which looks after those with learning disabilities and helps them to lead more independent lives, won big at the prestigious national LaingBuisson Awards.
Considered “the Oscars of health and social care”, the Awards recognise and celebrate industry excellence in health and social care across the public and private sectors.
Delegates across the health and social care sectors attended the awards evening where they were presented with the accolade. The evening was hosted by Gyles Brandreth, a broadcaster, writer, actor and former Member of Parliament.
The SYI Midlands service won the accolade for “outstanding supported living services” in the social care category. They were nominated by the people they support, family members and employees for providing services focused on individuals, where people have full choice and control over their support provision. Employees praised the management for its unfaltering support, passion and leadership within the service, for which they felt huge pride.
This was the second consecutive year that SYI Midlands have won this award – a highly unusual feat. Besides winning this latest award, members of the SYI Midlands team have also been finalists in The National Learning Disabilities and Autism Awards and Staffordshire’s Dignity in Care Awards this year alone.
SYI Midlands provides support to individuals with learning disabilities, autism and/or mental illnesses. It assists people with daily living in their own home or via outreach services, so they can live as independent a life as possible. People receive support catered to their own personal needs. The service helps people across the Midlands, including in Hereford, Worcester, Gloucester, Dudley, Wolverhampton, Cannock and Stoke-on-Trent. The service is based in Worcester and is managed by Priory Adult Care, part of the renowned mental healthcare specialists Priory Group.
Sally Jobling, Regional Manager at SYI Midlands and SYI South Wales, said: “What a great year 2017 has been for the people we support, my colleagues and the whole service. There have been so many success stories and we pride ourselves enormously in the work that we do, however it is always so satisfying to us when we get such warm acknowledgment from an outside organisation.”
