A Shropshire nursing home threw open its doors to the public as staff and residents raised money for a dementia charity.
Myford House Nursing Home in Telford recently invited people into the home for a variety of sweet treats as part of their twin backing for the Alzheimer’s Society’s Cupcake Day and the National Care Home Open Day.
Staff at the Horsehay home raised over £115 through the cupcake sale as they explained more about dementia and its treatments.
Manager Debbie Pugh said: “Dementia is the number one cause of death in England and Wales and Cupcake Day has become a widely-anticipated event so everyone can raise money towards helping find a cure.
“We had a fantastic day raising money, selling cakes, but importantly, showcasing what we do here at Myford House to help and support our residents who suffer with dementia.
“It is an annual event everyone wants to get involved with and we are delighted with this year’s response.
“Over the years, we have taken things a step further as we engage more with businesses and the local community to promote dementia and what we do. We have introduced a pen-pal initiative and are also hoping to link up with the local library so their staff can deliver talks to our residents. These are all ideas which keep residents, especially those with dementia, active, engaged and involved.”
The home, which is registered for 57 residents, has a special 12-bed dementia unit.
This year’s Cupcake campaign is being supported by TV chef Rosemary Shrager. It is aiming to raise more than the £330,000 collected in 2016.
Situated on the edge of Lightmoor Village, Myford House offers 24-hour care and accommodation to meet the needs of elderly adults and provides the setting for long or short stays, whether for personal, respite or convalescent care.
