Bernard Sunley care home in Woking, run by charity Friends of the Elderly, has started running a bimonthly nursery club within the home, which is proving to be a fantastic success.

A group of up to ten children aged between one and four attend twice a month with their childminders. They spend time in the home’s coffee shop where there is a great selection of toys for the children and where residents can join them to play and chat. The children also walk around the home visiting residents in the various communal lounges.

Andy Cumper, Manager of Bernard Sunley, said: “It’s so wonderful to have the children come in to the home so regularly; they are not shy at all and happily speak and play with the residents. They have a fascination with the zimmer frames, which our residents find very amusing! Our residents and staff find it so rewarding having the children bring their joy, laughter and innocence in to the home – the children and their childminders seem to really enjoy themselves too. It’s just so heart-warming to watch.”

Community engagement is an important part of life at Friends of the Elderly’s care homes.
