Residents at RMBI Care Co. Home Albert Edward Price of Wales Court, in Porthcawl, have finally been reunited with Stella, a therapy dog that used to visit them every two weeks. The affectionate animal was unable to come to the Home during the national lockdown, but she resumed her visits earlier this month.

The residents were delighted to be reunited with Stella, who was excited to be petted and stroked. Gillian Tatchell, member of Therapy Dogs Nationwide, led the dog all around the Home’s grounds so the residents could enjoy her company.  

One of them was 85-year-old Mollie Gould. She said: “I’m so glad they bring the animals into the home. It brings back all the memories of our own pets.”

Mandy Kilpatrick-Evans, one of the Home’s Activities Coordinators, said: “We have missed Stella so much. During the pandemic, the owner, Gillian, would send video clips for the residents to see the dog, but now she will be able to visit us again every fortnight. Residents like Dylis, who loves dogs, have doggy treats to hand at all times.”

Therapy dogs not only bring joy and much-needed calmness to the residents, but also benefit their mental health and wellbeing. Activities Coordinators Mandy Kilpatrick-Evans said: “A lot of our residents at Albert Edward Prince of Wales Court had pets before moving in, and they have fond memories attached to dogs. It’s a good way of helping them to remember.”
