A motley crew of salty sea dogs paid residents a visit to Royal Star & Garter in High Wycombe as the care home enjoyed a Pirates’ Day.

The all-day event was organised by staff at the Home in Hughenden Avenue on Friday 18th September, ahead of International Talk Like a Pirate Day.

Residents and staff dressed up for the day as buccaneers and cut-throats. They enjoyed a number of pirate-themed activities, delicious food, and there was a ration or two of rum on offer as well.

The day was organised by Activities Manager Hayley Helsdown and her team. Residents took part in a music-led activity, singing sea shanties, and also enjoyed a wordsearch and other themed games. Food on the day included breaded plaice with fries and cannon ball peas, Blackbeard’s calypso chicken, and rum and raisin ice cream.

Afterwards, Hayley said: “With performers unable to visit, we have to think of creative ways to entertain our residents. And this was really successful. Residents and staff had great fun dressing up, singing songs and having a good time.”

Resident John, who served in the Grenadier Guards, said: “It was a really fun day, with plenty of activities to keep us busy and entertained. We’re grateful to the staff for arranging it.”

Royal Star & Garter is a charity which provides loving compassionate care to veterans, and their partners, living with a disability or dementia. It also has Homes in Solihull and Surbiton.

The High Wycombe Home is once again welcoming new residents.
