Residents at Linden House care home in Epsom are developing a taste for spicy Indian food thanks to visits from their former chef assistant who now runs a successful catering business.

Sudesh O’Byrne left her job at Linden House in January to pursue her dream of owning a food business and founded Good Evening Food, based in Epsom. Now, she loves to pop back to Linden House to share Indian treats and delicacies with residents.

Sudesh said: “It’s great to come back to Linden House and share my love of cooking with the residents and staff.

“From my time at the home, I had the chance to get to know residents really well, and I discovered that they were really interested in trying new foods which enlivened their taste buds and I knew my food would bring that to them.”

For some residents, these visits have been a chance to try foods they wouldn’t normally consider, and for others it has brought back some wonderful memories of cultures they have previously experienced and appreciated.

91-year-old Irene was born in Madras and the visits from Sudesh have brought back wonderful memories of her childhood in India.

Irene said: “I lived in Madras until the age of five and experienced a lot of Indian culture at an early age. I have many fond memories of my childhood and tasting Sudesh’s Indian treats has brought those memories to life. Her visits have also prompted lots of conversation around the home of other childhood memories, it’s been wonderful to reminisce together.”

Paula Windmill, Home Manager at Linden House, said: “The residents and staff at Linden House are exceptionally grateful for Sudesh’s visits, and we would like to say a huge ‘thank you’.

“Everyone has thoroughly enjoyed the delicious treats and we can’t wait to sample some more at our barbeque on Care Home Open Day on 28th June.”
