RESIDENT RENEWS VOWS AFTER 47 YEARS

Steve and Val Dunn renew marriage vows at Park Avenue Care Home Kent

Park Avenue Care Home in Bromley recently held a special service as resident Steve Dunn renewed his marriage vows with his wife of 47 years Val.

Steve, who lives with dementia, asked for a helping hand from his daughter during a visit. As he expressed what he wanted to say, she wrote a note and sent it off to Val as an invitation.

Dementia often presents an emotional, unknown and sometimes challenging time for the whole family. It is important that every person, along with their loved ones, receives loving care and support, as they experience their journey in partnership with the team. With this in mind, the Park Avenue team were determined to make Val and Steve’s big day extra special. Hearing the news of the ceremony, the team busied themselves preparing for the special event - ensuring every little detail was perfect.

The sun shone as Val and her grandson Alfie entered the beautifully decorated garden to join Steve. Val was greeted by her closest family, as Elvis’ Can’t Help Falling in Love was performed by Quiannah, a daughter of one of the nurses, and a volunteer at the home.

The happy couple shared their vows, and Steve shed a happy tear as he said, "I do, I do." Val placed her hand on Steve’s ring as she spoke loving words to him, before her granddaughter, Bailey, presented her with a beautiful Amethyst ring from Steve.

The service was hosted by Excelcare’s Director of Care Quality & Transformation, Samantha Crawley.

After an unforgettable day, Val said: “I am overwhelmed by the love and care shown today. It has been so special - the lovely memories we created will remain with me forever.”
